Sheffield Institute of Art moved to this restored city landmark – the head post office – a grade II listed building known to generations of Sheffielders, which had stood empty for more than 15 years.
Following a £9m regeneration project which saw as many of the original features as possible retailed, the Institute of Art moved into their new home. The building now houses art and design courses including fashion design, graphic design, fine art, product design, interior design and many more. Students are able to learn, make and create in large studio spaces and specialist workshops using the latest technologies.
Hodkin & Jones were commissioned to restore the beautiful ceiling back to its original splendour. Some of the cornice was water damaged, so we had to take this down and start afresh from the existing moulds, then fix back to the ceilings. We also repaired cornice that was damaged on site to retain as much of the original mouldings as possible.
Now the building is an exciting environment for art and design staff and students, and welcomes hundreds of visitors through its doors every day. There is also a café and exhibition space which is open to the public, giving local people – many of whom worked in and used the head post office – the chance to reminisce in a building restored to its former glory.
